A Validation Study on the Korean Version of Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS-K) in a Sample of University Students
Kim Hee-Chul

Abstract
¡°Mental Health Literacy¡± has been identified as a crucial factor for increasing the possibility for the early intervention and mental health help-seeking. However, there had been no scale-based measurement comprehensively measuring all components of mental health literacy (Jorm et al., 1997) until Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS: O¡¯Connor & Casey, 2015) was developed. The purpose of this study is to validate the Korean version of MHLS (MHLS-K). A total of 305 university students participated in the survey and the result of exploratory factor analysis showed that the Korean version of MHLS was composed of 4 factors including ¡°attitudes toward people with mental illness¡±, ¡°help-seeking efficacy¡±, ¡°recognition of disorders¡±, and ¡°knowledge of mental illnesses and mental health services¡± 4-factor structure of MHLS-K was confirmed through confirmatory factor analysis with very good model fit indices. The reliability analysis and the results of analyses for examining convergent validity and known-group validity revealed MHLS-K was a reliable and valid measure. Finally, implications for social work practice and research are provided and limitations of the study are discussed.
